Phoenix Effect - Release Gig für das Debut-Album "Cyanide Skies"

Phoenix Effect - Release Gig for debut album "Cyanide Skies"
Where: Helsinki / Club Semifinal
When: 17.02.2009

© TIIA ÖHMANN Club Semifinal in Helsinki is a pretty cool place, very tiny and intimate, but the perfect location for a momentous occasion. An occasion, by the way, a lot of people - including me - were waiting for: the release of Phoenix Effect's debut album "Cyanide Skies". As you might have already noticed, Phoenix Effect is the new band of Janne Kärkkäinen. Some of you guys might remember Janne as former guitarist of Finnish band Sunrise Avenue, but he's so much more than just an "ex", namely a fantastic guitarist AND singer who's living his dream and who's now doing what he always wanted to do: ROCK.

I haven't been the first to arrive at Semifinal. Pretty fast I spotted some well known faces, companions , friends of Janne, but also some new fans ,Phoenix Effect already inspired when they played their first gig as supporting act for Finnish rockers "Poets of the Fall". AND some fans even came from Germany. They didn't want to miss the opportunity to celebrate this very special event. Just like me ;) What kind of bigger compliment a "young" band can ask for?

© TIIA ÖHMANN There was this positive excitement, some kind of nervousness. And it was like "salvation" when Janne., vested with Jeans and a white T-Shirt, and his band (Pyry - guitars, Lauri - bass and Jakke - drums ; btw: he's no band-member, just "borrowed") entered the stage around 20 p.m. They really put the heat on the spectators by performing their very first single "Broken Promises" (and by the way…Broken Promises is very successful in Finland). Semifinal was thrilled by powerful guitar-riffs and Jannes voice. And it went on like that! Next song was "King See No Evil", a grandiose rock-song that bristles with self-confidence and amazing sounding guitars. Also very impressive is Jannes voice in it's entirely spectrum. In a very convincing way, he gets these rocking songs across as much as he does with the more quiet or slow ones or a ballad. He proved this fact with "My Heart Is A Beating Drum", which is a love-song with high rock-song-qualities. They continued with "A Perfectly Good Day", which is a very thoughtful song, and "Bye Bye Arizona", which is about naivity of youth. Next song on the setlist was "Lucky Star". Of course a very special one as well, and not just because of Marko Saaresto - singer of "Poets of the Fall" who's also featured as singer on this track, at least on the album. This "job" was done on stage by Mr. Lauri Hämäläinen, and I have to say, he did it very well. He sang "like an angel") That followed, we had the pleasure to listen to "Hey You", which is a very light-hearted song; the only song I would call really "commercial". That doesn't mean that I miss these "commercial" stuff on the album, surely not; this album is so special - at least in my opinion - because it is not made to fit this "radio-hit-format".
"Carry Me" was the next song on the setlist, pretty quite and best qualified to make people a bit thoughtful. (By the way, ALL the songs are qualified for that….and this is meant as a compliment   )
After this one, Phoenix Effect performed this bombastic song called "Flashback 'N Memories" which started with this kind of "tongue twister". This song is really very rocky again, powerful and intoxicating.
Then the band disappeared from our sight….but there were a lot of loud "We-want-more"-calls and so they had no other choice but coming back ;) And we - the audience - didin't regret that we shouted them back on stage because they performed "Magic", the most wonderful ballad I've ever heard ;) . Some of us were moved to tears ;)
Most of all, I was impressed by this devotion and tenderness in Jannes voice. Are you guys very surprised when I tell you how much "Magic" touched my heart and my soul? Particulary with regard to the fact that Janne is singing this song for his 3 kids?

Unfortunately everything was over much too fast, but this is how it goes with good things in life. The fans would have loved it if Phoenix Effect would have played for hours….and I swear, the band would have loved to do it, too.

In the end, we all agreed: It has been a gorgeous concert of a fantastic Band and we all took them to our hearts. We were listening to 10 really noteworthy songs, not the typical mainstream, but nevertheless with a very high recognition-value.
To make a long story short: It was pure enjoyment

A lot of people are coming to concerts in anticipation of a fantastic light-show or spectacular special-effects. There were nothing like that….and probably, you won't find anything like that in the future. Phoenix Effect-concerts are just about music, to enjoy music and to share this joy with other people. I'm sure, Janne will never jump around on stage and do some kind of "acrobatic" ;) It's about getting the real essential things across… ROCK and HAVING FUN with it. And I have to say, these guys did it! Phoenix Effects-concerts will bring you goose-bumps, it's emotional, it's just Rock.

Please, allow me some personal words:

Thanks a lot, Janne, for this unforgettable night. You described it to me as "a night to remember" and you are so right!
Thanks for all these emotions, you gave to and shared with us. Thanks for hanging in there….although this certain guy did affirm that you "don't have the balls for this business". You SO have them…
Stay true, just stay as you are; you are really special
